How to enter unicode characters
Use vim or a GTK based editor such as gedit or mousepad 
CTL-SHIFT-nnnn [then release CTL-SHIFT]

eg
CTL-SHIFT-00E9 should display é [ leading zeros can be omitted ]
CTL-SHIFT-20AC should display €
CTL-SHIFT-35CA should display 㗊
CTL-SHIFT-1D71C should display
